This is part one of a four-part series about brand attributes focusing on values, purpose, mission, and vision.

What do you value?

The more challenging follow-up question is, “why?” but let’s start with what you value. It will help you reverse engineer the why. Identifying what you value is the foundation for action. Saying you value everything is to value nothing.

What is an essential part of your days, weeks, and life? What do you do during your work hours? What do you spend your “free” time doing? What would you miss if it was taken from you? Okay. Hopefully, that has the wheels turning. Now hold that thought.

Action values

What you value is essential. Your value is tied to your identity. It plays out in every area of life. What we do is a window into who we are and what we value. Sometimes we say we value certain things. But if our actions don’t line up with our words, then there’s a disconnect. Every passing minute is another chance to change that. An opportunity to realign. It’s not easy though. A yes to one thing is a no to another.

Your actions are a reflection of your values.

When your back is against the wall and you’re faced with a decision, what you decide reflects your values. This is what will surface your deeply held beliefs—your values.

If you value quality, you might take the time to learn about where your products are sourced from. If you value privacy, maybe you’ve considered using an analytics app that protects your visitors. If you value people, maybe you make a concerted effort to support brands that take care of their employees throughout the production process. Are your actions aligning with your values?

Aspirational values

Let’s consider the question from one more vantage point. What do you aspire to value? Fixate on that and take steps to align your actions with those values. Maybe you’re resolute in your values already. That’s great. Now it’s time to double-down.

Realigning or resolute, values are the foundation of branding, personally or professionally. Values shape the way you see the world. Your values are what you bring into every endeavor, business, and relationship. Your actions are a reflection of your values.
