This is part two of a four-part series about brand attributes focusing on values, purpose, mission, and vision.

I still haven’t found why I’m looking for.

Wait. Those aren’t the lyrics. But that’s not the point. The point must be to find the inspiration then. No. That’s not it either.

Inspiration is the fuel you need to get started. Inspiration is like an adrenaline shot. It’s meant to be a spark, not a steady source of energy. The point is about finding your purpose.

Purpose is what drives you when inspiration is a distant memory. Some people call this your big idea or dream. It’s the ideal future state that propels you forward. But it’s easy to get stuck in the how or the what along the way. Most people have dreams, but it’s not easy to make them a reality.

A purpose that ends with you is a trend.
A purpose that extends beyond you is a legacy.

What is your purpose as an entrepreneur? A business? An individual? Is it to make a certain amount of money so you can retire? Is it to build teams and processes to spend more time with family? Is it to contribute to building a niche-community within your city? There might be many reasons, but you only need one. One powerful purpose can be a catalyst, and it must be connected to your values.

There are simply too many opportunities to not have a goal in mind. Without a clear purpose you will drift. Without consistency you’re likely to miss what you’re aiming for.

Does your purpose end with you? Or do you have generational purpose in view? A purpose that ends with you is a trend. A purpose that extends beyond you is a legacy. What’s your purpose? Or as Simon Sinek has made so famous—what is your ‘why’?
